Privacy notice

No cookies. No advertising networks. No accounts. This page describes exactly what the site measures and why — including the one piece of browser storage it uses.

Effective 14 October 2026 · last updated 14 October 2026.

The short version

  • No advertising networks, no social pixels, no third-party analytics, no fingerprinting scripts.
  • No accounts, no comments, no newsletter, so no contact details are collected from readers.
  • No data is sold, rented or shared for marketing.
  • Because no cookies and no cross-site tracking are used, there is no cookie banner to dismiss.

What is measured

Traffic is measured by the site itself, on the server, and stored in the site's own files. No third party receives it. For each page view these fields are recorded:

  • the page path requested and the HTTP status returned;
  • the time of the request;
  • the hostname of the referring page, when a browser sends one (for example, a search engine domain) — not the full referring URL;
  • a coarse browser family (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Opera, Other) and whether the request came from an automated crawler;
  • a visitor identifier that is computed as a truncated SHA-256 hash of your IP address, your user-agent string and a random salt. The salt is regenerated every day and the old one is discarded, so the identifier cannot be linked across days and your IP address is never stored in the measurement data.

This is enough to count page views, estimate unique visitors per day, see which articles are read and how people arrive. It is deliberately not enough to identify you, build a profile of you, or follow you to other sites.

What is not done

  • No cookies are set — not for analytics, not for advertising, not for anything else.
  • No personal profile is built and no automated decisions are made about you.
  • No data leaves the site's own server except as anonymised, aggregated numbers in a private traffic report.
  • No reader data is used for advertising, retargeting or audience matching.

Browser storage

The site stores one item in your browser's local storage: your dark/light theme preference, and only once you switch themes. It is functional, stays on your device, is never transmitted, and clearing your browser data removes it. Nothing else is written to cookies, local storage or session storage.

Server logs

Like any web server, the machine hosting this site writes standard access logs that include IP address, requested path, user-agent and timestamp. These logs are used for security, abuse prevention and fault diagnosis, are visible only to the site operator, and are rotated and deleted on a rolling basis rather than kept indefinitely.

Legal bases (EU/UK GDPR)

  • Legitimate interests — article 6(1)(f) — for security logging and for aggregate, cookieless measurement of which articles are read. The measurement is designed to be non-identifying, and the daily salt rotation prevents any cross-day linking.
  • No consent is requested for measurement because no cookies, no device storage for tracking and no personal identifiers are involved. You may still object to this processing at any time — see below.

Retention

Raw measurement files (one per day) are kept for up to thirteen months so year-on-year comparisons remain possible, after which they are deleted and only aggregated daily summaries remain. Server access logs are rotated on a much shorter cycle.

Where the data is stored

This site runs on a single dedicated server located in Singapore. No content delivery network or external database is used, so the measurement data described above does not leave that server. If you are in the EU or UK and need information about the safeguards applied to storage outside your region, contact the address below.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to request access to personal data held about you, its correction or erasure, to object to processing, and to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. Note the practical limit: because measurement data uses a daily-rotating hash and stores no IP addresses, individual readers cannot be identified from it — so an access or erasure request may be impossible to fulfil against that data. Server logs are a different matter and requests about them will be handled on their merits.
