CPI-Gated Range Playbook: $4,193 Sell / $4,118 Buy
Gold trapped in a $4,143-$4,200 range ahead of the CPI print. Two conditional setups: sell the $4,190-4,196 rejection with SL $4,214, or buy the $4,118-4,124 Fibonacci flush with SL $4,098.

Trade plan at a glance
- Entry
- $4,190 – $4,196 sell limit, filled only on a rejection candle (upper wick through the zone, close back below $4,193)
- Stop loss
- $4,214 (above the range top, ~$21 risk from mid-entry)
- Take profit 1
- $4,148 (range mid / prior session low area)
- Take profit 2
- $4,118 (78.6% Fib, $4,120 shelf)
- Risk-reward
- ~2.1R to TP1, ~3.4R to TP2 from a $4,193 fill
- Do not take it if
- price closes a 4H candle above $4,215. That invalidates the range logic.

Instrument: XAUUSD (spot gold) · Session: Wednesday, 14 October 2026 · Bias: neutral-to-bearish intraday
September CPI prints at 12:30 UTC today, so this playbook is deliberately conditional. There is no honest single-direction signal minutes before a tier-one inflation release — there is a map of where the market is likely to break, and two pre-defined orders that only activate if price confirms.
Market structure snapshot
- Two-week range: roughly $4,143 – $4,200, with the top boundary of the wider consolidation at $4,215–$4,220.
- Trend: bearish consolidation inside a corrective phase that started from the August swing high. 4H RSI sits near 50, MACD negative but with a contracting histogram — downside pressure is fading, not reversing.
- Key moving average: 100-period SMA on the 4H at $4,193. Price has not held above it since the drop.
- Day's range so far: $4,143 – $4,170 against an ATR(14) of about $84. Only ~30% of the daily range is spent — expect expansion, most likely on the CPI release.
- Floor: 78.6% Fibonacci retracement at $4,115.
Rule zero
No open position through 12:30 UTC. Close intraday exposure 10 minutes before the release. Both sides of $4,143–$4,170 are liquidity targets; the first move after a CPI print is frequently a sweep of one side into a reversal of the other.
Setup A — primary: sell the rejection (with trend)
- Entry: $4,190 – $4,196 sell limit, filled only on a rejection candle (upper wick through the zone, close back below $4,193)
- Stop loss: $4,214 (above the range top, ~$21 risk from mid-entry)
- Take profit 1: $4,148 (range mid / prior session low area)
- Take profit 2: $4,118 (78.6% Fib, $4,120 shelf)
- Risk-reward: ~2.1R to TP1, ~3.4R to TP2 from a $4,193 fill
- Structural reason: the 100-SMA at $4,193 plus the $4,200 round number form a confluence supply zone that has rejected price repeatedly inside the consolidation. Selling failed retests of the range mid in a bearish-correction structure, with the hawkish Fed pricing (≈90% odds of a December hike) and 5.2%+ 10-year yields as the fundamental tailwind, is the highest-probability configuration on the board.
- Do not take it if: price closes a 4H candle above $4,215. That invalidates the range logic.
Setup B — alternative: buy the flush into the Fib
- Entry: $4,118 – $4,124 buy limit, or a reclaim of $4,124 after a sweep
- Stop loss: $4,098 (below the 78.6% retracement and the $4,100 round number, ~$23 risk from mid-entry)
- Take profit 1: $4,170 (session high / range mid)
- Take profit 2: $4,193 (100-SMA)
- Risk-reward: ~2.1R to TP1, ~3.1R to TP2
- Structural reason: 78.6% retracement plus the $4,100 psychological level is the classic last-defence zone of a corrective leg, and central bank demand (23 straight months of PBoC buying) plus record ETF inflows mean dips of this size have been absorbed all year. This is a counter-trend trade: it requires a soft core CPI print or an obvious failure to hold the sweep, and it is sized smaller than Setup A for that reason.
Where the setup fails
- Bullish invalidation of the whole bearish read: 4H close above $4,238 (61.8% retracement). Above that, targets shift to $4,325 and $4,412.
- Bearish invalidation of Setup B: 4H close below $4,100 opens $4,064–$4,074 and then the prior cycle low at $3,957.83.
- Time stop: if neither setup triggers by the New York close, cancel both orders. This is a session-specific plan.
Risk notes
- Size from the stop, not from conviction. A $21–$23 stop on gold is roughly 0.26 ATR — smaller than gold's noise band on a CPI day, so use a reduced position or wait for the second impulse instead of a pre-placed limit.
- Spreads on XAUUSD routinely widen from ~0.20 to 0.40–0.60 around the release, and slippage on stops is normal. Budget for it.
- Maximum 0.5–1% of account equity per setup. If both setups are live as pending orders, halve both sizes — a post-CPI whipsaw can trigger and stop one before the other fills.
- No martingale, no averaging down, no widening a stop. If the level fails, the level failed.
