September CPI: 90% Hike Odds and Gold Pinned at $4,150

September CPI printed 3.7% against 3.6% expected and gold lost the $4,143 shelf within two hours, then $3,957.83 within eight sessions. The three scenarios this preview mapped, graded against the tape.

Gold is pinned in a $27 band this morning, and the reason is on the calendar: September US CPI drops today at 12:30 UTC (08:30 ET). PPI follows on Thursday, and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh speaks at the IMF/World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok on Friday afternoon.

Spot XAUUSD is trading $4,146–$4,161 depending on your feed, inside a session range of roughly $4,143–$4,170. That is barely a third of the 14-day average true range near $84 — a market refusing to commit before the print. Gold is only ~17 dollars above last week's two-month low, and roughly $250 below the August swing high.

What the consensus expects

  • Headline CPI: +0.6% m/m, 3.6% y/y — up from +0.4% and 3.4% in August.
  • Core CPI: +0.2% m/m, 2.5% y/y — from +0.3% and 2.4%.

Read the asymmetry carefully. The market is already braced for a hot headline; energy is doing that work, with crude at a two-week high on Middle East supply risk. The number that actually moves gold is core, because core is what feeds the real-yield channel that has been dictating XAUUSD's path for months.

Why gold is on the back foot

  • Real yields are the whole story. The 10-year Treasury sits around 5.24%. When the risk-free rate is there, non-yielding metal needs a reason to be owned.
  • The Fed is in hiking mode, not cutting mode. Rates were raised last month for the first time since 2023, and CME FedWatch shows traders assigning roughly a 90% probability of another hike in December. New York Fed's John Williams said one more increase this year looks appropriate, while adding he does not expect further tightening in 2027.
  • The dollar is bid but cooling. DXY has slipped back to ~102 after printing an 18-month high — a two-day retreat that is the main thing keeping gold above $4,140.

What is still holding the bid

  • Central bank accumulation: 23 consecutive months of Chinese central bank gold purchases.
  • ETF flows: record inflows into gold ETFs this year.
  • Structure: spot is holding just above the 78.6% Fibonacci retracement at $4,115, the line FXStreet flags as the tentative floor of the corrective phase.

Pipocket's view: the levels matter more than the headline

Our read is that the bearish-consolidation structure holds unless core surprises soft — and that the tradable move is the second impulse after the print, not the first spike. Three scenarios:

Hot headline AND hot core (3.8%+ / 2.6%+). Dollar and yields bid, gold loses $4,143 and flushes into $4,120–$4,115. A 4H close below $4,115 opens the deeper correction toward the prior cycle low area at $3,957.83. This is the scenario where the range breaks with conviction.

In line (3.6% / 2.5%). Chop. The two-week range holds between $4,143 and $4,200, and the correct trade is fading the extremes with tight invalidation, not chasing.

Soft core (≤2.4%). Real yields ease, the dollar extends its retracement, and gold reclaims $4,170 then the 100-period SMA on the 4H at $4,193. The range top at $4,215–$4,220 is the gate; through it, the 61.8% retracement at $4,238 is the real tell that the corrective phase is over.

Actionable takeaways

  1. Do not carry directional risk into 12:30 UTC. Spreads widen, and both sides of the $4,143–$4,170 band are obvious liquidity targets. Sweep-then-reverse is the highest-probability post-CPI pattern.
  2. Trade the second move. Let the first 15–30 minutes establish the level that held, then position with the reclaim or rejection.
  3. Invalidation is a level, not a feeling: a 4H close above $4,238 kills the bearish-consolidation case; a 4H close below $4,100 kills the buy-the-dip case.
  4. Watch Warsh on Friday — the 2027 path matters more to gold than today's backward-looking inflation number.

Bottom line

A hot core number is the only outcome that credibly breaks $4,115 this week. Everything else keeps XAUUSD inside its two-week range, which makes this a levels game: fade the edges, respect $4,238 as the bull trigger, and let the data pick the direction rather than picking it for it.

Update — 1 November 2026

The print this preview was built around landed hot, and the "hot headline AND hot core" scenario above is the one that paid. September CPI printed 3.7% y/y against 3.6% expected with core at 2.6% against 2.5% (Kitco). Gold lost the $4,143 shelf within two hours of the 12:30 UTC release and traded $4,073–$4,078 in the same session, under the $4,120–$4,115 flush zone mapped here.

The deeper target took eight more sessions. The episode low was $3,975.64 on 23 October — $18 above the $3,957.83 level this post named as the correction objective — and the month's final session then broke through it to $3,870.17. October closed at $3,875.44–$3,884.90 depending on the feed, 6.8% below September's $4,157.34 close and the lowest level since October 2025.

Two things did not follow the script. The Fed held at 3.75%–4.00% on 28 October rather than hiking, on a 10-2 vote with both dissents wanting a hike (CNBC). And the 30 October session fell 3.6% on a day when the 10-year yield fell to 4.93% — a chip-led equity rout, not the yield channel this post was built on (Market Briefer). The line that needed no forecast was the first takeaway: no position through 12:30 UTC.
