PPI News: 6.3% vs 5.3% Expected — XAUUSD Refuses to Break

PPI news: September producer prices rose 1.3% m/m and 6.3% y/y against 5.3% expected, the hottest since 2022 — yet XAUUSD dipped only $12 before round-tripping to $4,155-4,163.

September PPI landed at 12:30 UTC and it was not close. Final demand rose 1.3% m/m against +0.6% expected — the largest monthly advance since March 2022 — and 6.3% y/y against a 5.3-5.5% consensus, the fastest annual rate since December 2022 (BLS, investinglive, CNBC). Core producer prices ran +0.7% m/m against +0.3% expected (Forex Factory calendar).

Under the hood it is an energy print wearing a core costume: more than 80% of the advance came from final demand energy, up 10.8%, while goods rose 2.6% — the largest increase since the series began in December 2009 — and services rose 0.8%. The strip that feeds PCE estimates, final demand less foods, energy and trade services, still ran +0.5% m/m and +5.0% y/y (BLS).

The rest of the 12:30 package was no softer. Retail sales rose 0.8% m/m against +0.3% expected, August revised up to +1.3% and the level at $745.0bn, up 6.3% year over year (AP, Census). Jobless claims printed 199K against 200K, a fourth straight week below 200K, with continuing claims down to 1.710M (investinglive).

Hot consumer inflation on Wednesday, hot producer inflation on Thursday, and a consumer that will not slow down: rising costs at the business end, resilient demand at the household end, and nothing in the data that argues for the slowdown the Fed needs to see.

Gold's reaction: a dip, not a break

Gold went into the release with a tailwind. Spot was $4,156.58 by 11:24 GMT, up 1.3% on the day and fully retraced from Wednesday's CPI flush to $4,073.41 (Reuters, TradingKey). The 10-year yield sat at a three-week low of 5.077-5.085%, the 30-year at 5.428%, and the dollar index at 102.03, down 0.2% and off its 18-month peak (Economies.com, Reuters via Investing.com).

Then the numbers landed and the tape did almost nothing with them. The first solid post-print mark we can source is Kitco's $4,144.60 at 12:53 UTC — roughly $12 below the pre-print level. By 13:08 spot was quoted near $4,148, and by 13:20 Kitco's ticker had it back at $4,162.80, up $58.30 on the day, with other feeds between $4,154 and $4,165 (Kitco, financefeeds, TIndex, IFC Markets). Feeds disagree by $10-20 at this hour; read the level as a band, not a tick.

Measured on the on-chain gold perpetual, the release cost bullion about 19 basis points in the first minute and 28bps by fifteen minutes — roughly $8 and $12 on a $4,150 handle — while silver's perp fell 24bps and 36bps over the same marks and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq perps gave back 9-12bps (Hyperliquid release data). Gold was not the asset that took the hit. Risk assets were.

What it does to the rate path

Almost nothing, so far — and that is the story. October hike pricing stood at 28-30% (hold 70-71%) across Kalshi, Polymarket and fed funds futures before the print, after Fed officials talked the front end back down from the 41-54% spike that followed CPI (Fed rate tracker, Morningstar).

A composite this hot should have pushed those odds up. Nothing in the price action after 12:30 UTC says it did: yields did not re-spike, the dollar did not reclaim its 18-month high, and gold round-tripped its knee-jerk. The flow driving this week is a long-end rally born of AI-credit and equity stress, and the Fed has signalled it is in no hurry before 27-28 October. December, not October, remains the market's base case.

The levels

  • Support: $4,140-4,145 (the post-print dip), $4,131 (range low), $4,100 (the shelf Wednesday closed above), then $4,073 and the $4,066 October 7 low.
  • Resistance: $4,160-4,162 (intraday high and the 1H 200-EMA), $4,172 (range high), then $4,188-4,200 (overhead supply and the level gold has failed at repeatedly).
  • Invalidation: a 1-hour close back below $4,131 hands the recovery over to the $4,100/$4,073 test; a decisive break of $4,066 reopens $4,000-4,040. Acceptance above $4,172 would say Wednesday's flush is fully repaired.

What to watch next

  • Warsh at the IMF, Friday. The Chair takes questions from IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva in Bangkok — the last scheduled Fed airtime before the blackout into the 27-28 October meeting (schedule). Watch whether he frames the energy shock as transitory or as broadening price pressure.
  • October odds. If a 1.3% PPI cannot pull the October hike back into the 40s, the market is telling you December is the live meeting.
  • Oil. Brent near $104 with Strait of Hormuz headlines is the input behind both the PPI energy spike and CPI gasoline.
  • Next gates. FOMC 27-28 October, then October CPI on 10 November.

How this desk's own plan is holding up

This morning's signal was to sell the $4,145-4,155 retest with a stop above $4,172, or buy a reclaim and hold above $4,155 (15 October plan). The post-print dip tagged the bottom of that sell zone on the sourced marks; whether the order filled is for the desk's grader to resolve after the New York close, because we do not mark our own book by hand. Every release reaction is filed in the reactions dataset, with anything unverified left empty rather than estimated.

More macro coverage sits on the news board; producer inflation is filed under /topics/ppi.

Not financial advice. Levels are bands we are watching, not predictions, and spot gold feeds disagree by $10-20 intraday.
