Post-CPI Pressure Into PPI: $4,150 Sell / $4,155 Reclaim
Gold closed the CPI session near $4,085 after a 3.7% September print and now sits under every average. Two conditional orders into today's 12:30 UTC PPI: sell the $4,145-4,155 retest with SL $4,172, or buy a reclaim-and-hold above $4,155 with SL $4,132.

Instrument: XAUUSD (spot gold) · Session: Thursday, 15 October 2026 · Bias: bearish, conditional
September PPI, retail sales and jobless claims all land at 12:30 UTC today, three days after a CPI print that took the range apart. Yesterday answered the question this desk refused to answer in advance: the hot print came, gold broke, and the conditional order that filled was stopped for 1R. Both setups from yesterday's playbook are on the public ledger at /track-record, losses included.
Today is a different structure. Price is no longer inside a range — it is below the range, and every average that mattered is now overhead.
What changed in the CPI session
- September CPI: +0.6% m/m (in line), 3.7% y/y against 3.6% expected; core 2.6% y/y against 2.5% expected. Headline monthly matched consensus, so the surprise was the annual rate and the core, not the monthly pace.
- October hike odds roughly doubled on the release, from about 22% to about 44%, with December still priced near 90%.
- Gold fell about 1.7% to the $4,085-4,087 area, silver dropped close to 4% to about $56.99, and the dollar firmed.
- The 10-year yield near 5.2% keeps the opportunity cost of a non-yielding asset high — the same force that capped every rally since August.
Market structure snapshot
- Averages are stacked above price in bearish order. The 4H EMA9 and SMA50 sit at $4,145-$4,155, the 21-day SMA at $4,216, the 100-day at $4,250, the 50-day at $4,337. Gold has not reclaimed any of them.
- Momentum is weak, not washed out. Daily RSI is near 31 and Stoch RSI is already deeply oversold, so a squeeze is possible — but reversal confirmation is absent and MACD remains below zero and below its signal line.
- The broken level is the new ceiling. $4,145-$4,155 offered support on the way into CPI; it was lost on the print and is the first place sellers should be waiting.
- Support ladder: $4,085 (CPI session low), $4,073, $4,066 (last week's low, on the rising triangle trendline), then $4,030 and $4,020.
- Resistance ladder: $4,112, $4,145-$4,155, $4,190, $4,208-$4,214.
Rule zero
No open position through 12:30 UTC. PPI, retail sales and jobless claims in one minute, three days after a 1.7% break. Close intraday exposure ten minutes before the release. The first move after a data cluster frequently sweeps one side of the immediate balance and reverses it, which is exactly how yesterday's flush behaved.
Setup A — primary: sell the retest (with the trend)
- Entry: $4,145 – $4,155 sell limit, filled only on a rejection candle (wick through the zone, close back below $4,145)
- Stop loss: $4,172 (above the 4H EMA9/SMA50 cluster and the prior session's recovery high)
- Take profit 1: $4,085 (CPI session low)
- Take profit 2: $4,030 (below the weekly low, extension of the break)
- Risk-reward: ≈3.0R to TP1, ≈5.4R to TP2 from a $4,150 fill ($22 risk, $65 and $120 reward)
- Structural reason: the $4,145-$4,155 zone is broken support, an EMA9/SMA50 confluence on the 4H, and the level the CPI candle sliced through. Bearish structure, stacked averages and rising hike odds all point the same way, and the reward sits above the immediate support shelf so the trade has room before it hits the first target.
Setup B — conditional: buy the reclaim (counter-trend, smaller size)
- Entry: $4,155 buy stop, only if a 4-hour candle closes above it and the retest holds $4,145
- Stop loss: $4,132 (back inside the broken zone = the reclaim failed)
- Take profit 1: $4,190
- Take profit 2: $4,208
- Risk-reward: ≈1.5R to TP1, ≈2.3R to TP2 from a $4,155 fill
- Structural reason: a soft PPI with falling yields is the one clean bullish catalyst left, and deeply oversold stochastic plus a 3-day slide is the fuel. This is a counter-trend trade into a stacked-average ceiling, which is why it sizes smaller than Setup A and waits for a close rather than a wick.
Invalidation
- 4-hour close above $4,172: Setup A is void. Sellers lost the zone and the reclaim has momentum.
- 4-hour close below $4,085: opens $4,066 and then $4,030; the weekly trendline is the last structural floor before $4,000.
- Soft PPI core with the 10-year easing: the squeeze accelerates, and Setup B becomes the active plan rather than the fallback.
- Hot PPI with the dollar breaking higher: expect a sweep of $4,085 into a reversal setup rather than a clean continuation — let the print settle before re-engaging.

Risk note: these are conditional levels, not investment advice. Spot gold feeds disagree by $10-20; treat the zones as bands. Position size so a stop costs a fixed fraction of the account. Yesterday's published buy-the-flush setup was stopped for 1R — the ledger is public and losses are posted with the wins.
