Haven Bid Into Warsh's IMF Dialogue: $4,144 Buy / $4,186 Sell

Gold round-tripped Wednesday's CPI flush and traded Thursday near $4,150-4,165 as an AI-equity selloff drove a bond rally and the dollar slipped to 102.1. For Friday: buy the $4,140-4,148 pullback with SL $4,122, or sell a failed retest of $4,182-4,190 with SL $4,206, around Fed Chair Warsh's 03:30 UTC IMF fireside.

Instrument: XAUUSD (spot gold) · Session: Friday, 16 October 2026 · Bias: constructive above $4,140, conditional below

Thursday refused to follow Wednesday. September PPI printed at +1.3% m/m against +0.6% expected, the hottest since March 2022, with retail sales at +0.8% and claims at 199K — and gold dipped $12 to $4,144.60 before round-tripping to $4,162.80 within half an hour. Two hot inflation prints in two days, and the metal is higher after the second one than before the first. The flow moving gold is no longer the rate path; it is a bond rally.

What the tape did

  • Thursday's spot range was roughly $4,128-4,166 — $4,134.08 at 06:44 GMT, $4,156.58 at 11:24 GMT, the post-PPI dip to $4,144.60, back to $4,162.80 by 13:20 GMT, and $4,150-4,165 late in New York. Feeds disagree by $10-20: read it as a band.
  • Wednesday closed at $4,104.80, flush low $4,073-4,084 — the level that has to hold for this to stay a recovery.
  • The dollar slipped to 102.1, down about 0.4-0.5%, off Wednesday's 18-month high of 102.59.
  • The 10-year yield fell to a three-week low near 5.08% (30-year 5.428%) as an AI-linked equity and credit selloff pushed money into government bonds.
  • October hike odds sit near 29% after the full data set — hold is the base case, December still priced. Two hot prints failed to move the front end, so the live risk is growth and credit, not a hiking Fed.
  • Oil is the inflation input: WTI near $92.91, Brent near $104.39.

Where the structure sits

  • Resistance: $4,161-4,166 (Thursday's high zone, 1H 200-EMA), $4,172 (range high), $4,181-4,188 (overhead supply), then $4,216 (21-day SMA).
  • Support: $4,131-4,134 (the London shelf the rebound started from), $4,127.56 (first technical support), $4,107-4,112, then $4,084-4,088 and Wednesday's $4,073 low.
  • The bigger averages are still overhead — 21-day $4,216, 100-day $4,250 — so this is a repair inside a damaged structure, not a new trend.

The catalyst and the clock

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva hold their fireside chat at 10:30-11:00 Bangkok time Friday — 03:30-04:00 UTC, the Asian session, and the last scheduled Fed airtime before the pre-FOMC blackout starts on 17 October.

The asymmetry is clean. Treat the energy-led PPI as transitory and repeat that the Fed is in no hurry before 27-28 October: the bond rally extends, the dollar stays offered, pullbacks get bought. Frame 1.3% as pressure broadening past energy and yields and the dollar re-bid, stalling the recovery at the $4,161-4,172 shelf. Secondary US data — import/export prices and September industrial production — lands at 13:15 UTC; neither is a first-tier gold mover next to the Chair.

Rule zero: no new position in the ten minutes either side of 03:30 UTC.

Setup A — primary: buy the pullback while the bond bid holds

  • Entry: $4,140 – $4,148 buy limit, working the upper half of the band only on a first touch that leaves a rejection wick
  • Stop loss: $4,122 (below the $4,127.56 first support and Thursday's London shelf — inside the shelf means the recovery failed)
  • Take profit 1: $4,178
  • Take profit 2: $4,205
  • Risk-reward: ≈1.5R to TP1, ≈2.8R to TP2 from a $4,144 fill ($22 risk, $34 and $61 reward)
  • Do not take it if the 03:30 UTC window falls inside your holding period and you cannot watch it — let the headline pass rather than carrying a fresh entry through it.
  • Structural reason: price reclaimed the $4,145-4,155 zone it lost on CPI and is holding above it, the dollar is off its 18-month high, and the 10-year is at a three-week low — none of which needs the Fed to turn dovish, only for the AI-credit bid for duration to keep running. The stop sits inside a defined level rather than a round number.

Setup B — conditional: sell the failed retest

  • Entry: $4,182 – $4,190 sell limit, filled only on rejection (wick into the zone, close back below $4,182)
  • Stop loss: $4,206
  • Take profit 1: $4,140
  • Take profit 2: $4,104
  • Risk-reward: ≈2.3R to TP1, ≈4.1R to TP2 from a $4,186 fill ($20 risk, $46 and $82 reward)
  • Structural reason: $4,181-4,188 capped every bounce in the second half of September and gold remains below its 21-day and 100-day averages. A hawkish Warsh into a stacked average ceiling is the one clean bearish setup left; it stays conditional because two bearish catalysts have already failed.

What invalidates this

  • 4-hour close below $4,122: Setup A void. Next are $4,107, then $4,084-4,088; a decisive break of $4,066 reopens $4,000-4,040.
  • 4-hour close above $4,178: Setup B void. Wednesday's flush is fully repaired and $4,216 is the first real overhead test.
  • Hawkish Warsh with yields and the dollar re-bidding: expect a sweep of the $4,140-4,150 shelf into a reversal rather than clean continuation — let the first hour settle.
  • Dovish Warsh with the bond rally extending: Setup A is the only plan worth watching, and $4,182-4,188 decides whether the repair becomes a trend.

Execution notes

Gold spreads on the majors widen from roughly 15-20 cents to $1-2 through the 03:30 UTC headline, and the first tick after it slips routinely. Size for the stop, not the idea: on a $22 stop, fix the cash loss first and work backwards to lots.

This desk's own book

Thursday's plan was to sell the $4,145-4,155 retest with SL $4,172 (15 October plan). The post-PPI dip tagged that zone and price then recovered to $4,162.80 before the New York close; whether it filled is for the desk's grader after the close — we do not mark our own book by hand, and the verdict lands on the public ledger either way.

Plans like this are dated and graded on the signals board; session structure is collected under /topics/session-levels, and the macro backdrop sits on the news board.

Risk note: these are conditional levels, not investment advice. Spot gold feeds disagree by $10-20 intraday — treat each zone as a band and size so a stop costs a fixed fraction of the account.
