Primary levels from this article — any conditional alternative is laid out in the body below. Sizing comes from the stop distance; confirm on your own feed before acting, spreads and gaps are real.

Gold opened Tuesday at $4,131.99, made its low of $4,111.71 at 10:00 UTC, then spiked $34.49 in the 14:00 hour on the weakest pending-home-sales print in years — and closed that same hour at $4,142.91, $12.54 below its high. The metal finished at $4,121.66, down $19.38 (0.47%) from Monday's $4,141.04 New York close.

That sequence is the whole message. Weak US housing data is supposed to be gold's friend. On Tuesday the market used it for exit liquidity.

What actually moved it

Housing starts, 12:30 UTC. September starts fell 5.2% to a 1.221 million annual rate against a 1.300 million consensus, and August was revised up to 1.288 million — so the miss is not a base-effect artefact. Permits, the forward-looking half of the report, slipped 0.2% to 1.400 million against 1.390 million expected. Gold was already near its session low into the release and it stayed there.

Pending home sales, 14:00 UTC. The NAR index fell 7.3% m/m to 66.0, all four regions lower and the West leading at 9.2%, with mortgage rates crossing 7% for the first time in 20 months. That is the print that produced the high of $4,155.45. It was gone within the hour.

Then the other inputs. Crude fell: WTI settled $97.84 and Brent $108.94, both lower as traders positioned for diplomatic progress in the Gulf, even with attacks on commercial shipping in Hormuz escalating over recent weeks. A lower oil price trims the inflation impulse that has been this market's war trade. Gold fell with oil on a day when the 10-year eased two basis points to 5.12% and the dollar index sat at 101.84 (0.14% lower) at 06:00 UTC.

Gold did not fall because yields or the dollar forced it; it fell while both were flat to friendly, on a day the calendar handed it two bad-data bids and it refused both. That is the haven premium unwinding, not a rate repricing.

Structure: lower highs, one shelf left

Two sessions, two lower highs — $4,190.39 on Monday, $4,155.45 on Tuesday — and two lower lows, $4,132.26 then $4,111.71. Daily price sits under the 20-day at $4,170.05 and the 50-day at $4,321.36, with ATR(14) at $76.65.

The shelf that matters is $4,110.95, the 28 September low. Tuesday tested it three times — $4,112.20 at 09:00 UTC, $4,111.71 at 10:00 and $4,112.83 at 12:00 — and each test was bought back inside the hour. Below it the references are $4,099.77 (15 October low), then $4,073.44 (14 October) and $4,066.06 (7 October). Above, $4,132.26 has flipped to supply: Monday's low, Tuesday's open, and the level the 16:00 hour closed beneath.

Trade plan — Wednesday 21 October

  • Instrument: XAUUSD spot
  • Session: Asian open through the New York close, 06:00–21:00 UTC
  • Bias: bearish while $4,155 caps, with $4,110.95 deciding between another range day and a leg lower
  • Entry: $4,140 – $4,148 sell limit, first touch (Setup A, primary)
  • Stop loss: $4,160
  • Take profit 1: $4,116
  • Take profit 2: $4,092
  • Risk-reward: 1.75R to TP1 and 3.25R to TP2 from a $4,144 fill
  • Entry (conditional): $4,104 – $4,112 buy limit (Setup B)
  • Stop loss (conditional): $4,095
  • Take profit 1 (conditional): $4,134
  • Take profit 2 (conditional): $4,152
  • Risk-reward (conditional): 2.0R to TP1 and 3.4R to TP2 from a $4,108 fill
  • Do not take it if the London open prints below $4,100 or above $4,160, or between 05:45 and 06:15 UTC — UK CPI lands at 06:00.
  • Time stop: 16:00 UTC — cancel anything unfilled and close anything still open.

Setup A sells the retest of Monday's broken low with the stop above Tuesday's high. Setup B is a resting order at the shelf, not a discretionary one: it fills on first touch, and if the stop goes the setup is over. Only one order live at a time; if B fills, cancel A.

Why the stops sit where they are

Setup A's $4,160 clears Tuesday's $4,155.45 high and Monday's $4,161.9 pivot in a single level, so a stop there means the sold-spike read failed rather than that the high was merely swept.

Setup B's $4,095 sits under $4,099.77, the next shelf down, so a fill that loses it means the entire $4,073–$4,100 block is open. B's second target at $4,152 stays under A's stop, so the two plans cannot both be right in the same hour.

A 16-point stop against a $76.65 daily range is a fifth of it. At 100 oz a standard lot that is $1,600 of risk, so size from the stop, not from the point count.

Invalidation map

  • Four-hour close above $4,160: cancel A. The sold-spike read is wrong; the next references are the 20-day at $4,170.05 and Monday's $4,168–$4,175 supply.
  • Four-hour close below $4,110.95: B is dead. A's targets become $4,099.77 and $4,073.44, and a weekly close under $4,073 ends the higher-low sequence that started at $4,066.06.
  • UK core CPI above 2.9% with gilt yields higher: favour A, take TP1 without moving the stop up.
  • UK core CPI at or below 2.6% with the dollar index under 101.5: halve A. The rate tailwind it is shorting into would be gone.
  • Confirmed Iranian retaliation against Gulf energy infrastructure: stand aside entirely. A haven impulse beats a 16-point stop and this desk does not fade one.
  • A weak 20-year auction: it settles at 17:00 UTC, after the time stop. If you are still holding A into it, cut the size first.

Execution notes

Spreads on XAUUSD run 25–35 cents in the London afternoon and 40–60 around the 06:00 UTC UK print. Do not open anything between 05:45 and 06:15 UTC; a resting fill is held with its stop, but nothing new goes on through a tier-one release. Price the stop off the actual fill — a fill at the bottom of A's zone at $4,140 pays 1.2R to the first target, not the 1.75R quoted, which is why the zone is a band and not a number.

For the record on yesterday's plan: the $4,161–$4,168 sell never filled, because Tuesday's high was $4,155.45. The $4,126–$4,134 buy filled at the open — price opened at $4,131.99, inside the zone — ran to $4,146.85 at 03:00 UTC, $14 short of the $4,161 first target, and the $4,112 stop was traded through at 10:00 UTC when the tape printed $4,111.71. The grader books the ledger verdict; this article is not the ledger.

What changes the read

Wednesday's US calendar is empty at the top tier — MBA mortgage applications at 11:00 UTC, EIA crude at 14:30, the 20-year auction at 17:00 — so yields and headlines set the tone. The only tier-one print of the session is UK CPI at 06:00 UTC: 3.4% headline expected from 3.1%, core 2.8% from 2.6%, with Bank Rate at 3.75% and a 5 November hike close to fully priced. The event that actually reprices this market is the FOMC on 27–28 October, and the Fed is in its blackout until then.
