Primary levels from this article — any conditional alternative is laid out in the body below. Sizing comes from the stop distance; confirm on your own feed before acting, spreads and gaps are real.
Gold closed the week in a $4,155–$4,167 band depending on the feed — the wire composite printed $4,167.14, the Investing.com hourly series closed at $4,165.40 — down roughly 0.5% on the week after trading a $4,074–$4,214 range. Friday's own range was $4,147.39 to $4,198.62, and the metal gave back a third of that advance in the final three hours of New York.
Monday has no tier-one US data and the Fed is in its pre-meeting blackout, so price will be set by headlines out of the Gulf rather than by the calendar. That changes the shape of the trade: two resting orders around a defined range, not a directional bet through an event.
The structure: three rising lows, one stubborn ceiling
The week built a clean sequence of higher lows on the hourly series:
- Wednesday's CPI session bottomed near $4,074 around midday, the low of the week.
- Thursday's post-PPI dip held $4,131.33 and the session closed $4,170.64.
- Friday's Asian low printed $4,147.39 in the 01:00 UTC bar and was never revisited.
The ceiling is equally clear. Friday's rally stalled at $4,198.62 in the 14:00 UTC bar — the same $4,198 area that capped Tuesday's advance — and the next two hours took price back to $4,155. The weekly high of roughly $4,214 was set on Sunday evening and never challenged again. That leaves the market pinned at $4,165, with $4,177 (Thursday's high) as the pivot between a re-test of the ceiling and another drift to the lows.
The backdrop is doing two opposite things
Tailwind: the 10-year yield closed at 5.097%, down from about 5.24% on Monday, and the 30-year at 5.436% had its biggest weekly drop in more than a year. The dollar index finished at 101.78–101.84, down about 0.4% on the week and off an 18-month peak. Lower yields and a softer dollar are the two conditions gold needs.
Headwind: Brent settled at $109.86, its highest close since 19 May, and WTI at $101.41 after a 3.5% Friday rally. That is how the Gulf war reaches US inflation, and it keeps the hiking argument alive. Warsh, speaking at an IMF event in Bangkok on Friday, declined to signal the 28 October decision; CME FedWatch put October hike odds at 17%, down from 28% a day earlier, with December unchanged at 89%.
Gap risk: the Strait of Hormuz is still effectively closed. The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency counted at least 10 vessels attacked in or near the strait in the week to Friday — a weekly high since the war began — and 23 since 1 October, against 2 transits on 11 October versus a pre-war 85 a day. Iran said Sunday its seven-day reopening proposal remains on the table, and a tug was struck by two projectiles off the UAE. A confirmed strike on Gulf energy infrastructure before Monday's open is the most likely cause of a gap.
Monday's only US release is the NAHB housing index at 14:00 UTC, expected to hold at 32. That is not a gold event.
Trade plan — Monday 19 October
- Instrument: XAUUSD spot
- Session: London open through the New York close
- Bias: constructive while $4,147 holds, capped below $4,199
- Entry: $4,146 – $4,152 buy limit, first touch (Setup A, primary)
- Stop loss: $4,129
- Take profit 1: $4,177
- Take profit 2: $4,198
- Risk-reward: 1.4R to TP1 and 2.5R to TP2 from a $4,149 fill
- Entry (conditional): $4,196 – $4,202 sell limit (Setup B)
- Stop loss (conditional): $4,216
- Take profit 1 (conditional): $4,166
- Take profit 2 (conditional): $4,147
- Risk-reward (conditional): 1.9R to TP1 and 3.1R to TP2 from a $4,199 fill
- Do not take it if the London open prints outside the $4,147–$4,199 range.
Setup A buys the third higher low of the sequence; Setup B sells the ceiling that has rejected price twice. Only one should be live at a time — if A fills and runs to the ceiling, cancel B rather than flipping short into momentum.
Why the stop sits below $4,129
Friday's $4,147.39 low is the most obvious stop pool on the chart, and sweeps of exactly that print routinely run 15 to 20 dollars before reversing. A stop at $4,140 gets taken out by a routine wick and then watches the setup work without us. The stop at $4,129 sits under Thursday's $4,131.33 low, the level that has to break for the higher-low sequence to be genuinely invalidated.
The cost of that honesty is a 1.4R first target — the right trade-off on a range day with no data catalyst. For the 2R-plus version, take Setup B, which has a tighter structural stop behind the weekly high.
Invalidation map
- Gap below $4,140 at the Sunday open: cancel Setup A. The higher-low sequence is broken; the next references are $4,131, then $4,105.
- Gap above $4,190: Setup A never fills. Do not chase it — take Setup B only on a rejection after the London open, never into the gap.
- Fresh escalation headline: a confirmed strike on Gulf energy infrastructure or a formal closure statement overrides the plan. Range logic does not survive a safe-haven impulse; stand aside rather than fade it.
- Yields back above 5.20% with the dollar index through 102.20 removes the tailwind. Halve Setup A size or skip it.
- Time stop: if neither order has filled by 16:00 UTC, cancel both and re-mark for Tuesday's housing data.
Execution notes
Liquidity is thin at the 22:00–23:00 UTC Sunday open and again around 14:00 UTC when the NAHB print and bill auctions land: expect XAUUSD spreads of 40 to 60 cents there against 25 to 35 in the London afternoon. Use limits, not market orders, and price the stop off the fill — a twenty-dollar stop is $2,000 of risk per standard lot (100 oz), so size so that number is no more than half a percent of equity.
If you took Friday's plan from this desk, the tape took the top of that $4,140–$4,148 buy at 01:00 UTC and printed $4,179.65 an hour later.
What would change the read
A close above $4,199 puts $4,214, the weekly high, back in play. A close below $4,131 puts $4,105 and the $4,074 CPI low back in play, and would mean the Thursday–Friday recovery was a countertrend bounce inside a market still pricing a December hike at 89%. Next scheduled tests: Tuesday's housing starts at 12:30 UTC and Friday's flash PMIs, with manufacturing expected at 55.5 against 55.9 and services at 58.1 against 58.8.
