Gold Gives Back a $4,184 Gap as Yields Hit 5.14%
XAUUSD reversed a $4,184.84 opening gap to close $4,141.04 as the 10-year backed up to 5.144% on the Konarak strike report, leaving Thursday's $4,131.33 low as the only support standing.

Gold gapped up to $4,184.84 at Monday's open from Friday's $4,165.50 close, tagged $4,190.39 in the 07:00 UTC hour, and spent the rest of the session handing it back. The metal gave up $4,161.9, the level that had held as support through Friday and Monday's Asian session, took out Friday's $4,147.39 low, and printed $4,136.74 at 17:00 UTC before closing at $4,141.04 — $24 below Friday and 1.05% down from Sunday's $4,184.99 settle.
A gap that gets fully reversed in one session is not range drift. It is a failed auction, and it changes which side of this market is being paid.
What actually moved it
Not the calendar. The NAHB housing index at 14:00 UTC printed 29 against a 31 consensus, down from 32 and the lowest reading since June 2012 — a genuinely weak number, and gold fell straight through it. On the day housing data collapsed, the metal's bid came from the yield curve, not the economy.
The Konarak report. Iran's navy said the US military hit its Konarak naval base on the Gulf of Oman, roughly 30 km west of Chabahar, with "two light projectiles" at about 01:00 local time, wounding two personnel. Washington has not confirmed the strike, and an American official told i24NEWS the Iranian account is "not accurate". If it happened, it is the first US fire to land on Iranian territory in about seven weeks, and it comes eleven days after President Trump said Washington would not attack Iran before next month's midterms. The IRGC spokesman's answer was one line: "The world will see what will happen." Attribution rests on Iran's word, which is itself a reason to keep the plan two-sided.
The chain that mattered for gold. WTI had been trading under $97; it bounced to $99.30 on the report and settled at $98.45, with Brent at $109.48. Crude is the inflation input, so the 10-year — which had been near a four-week low around 5.08% in the morning — backed up six basis points to 5.144%. Gold pays no coupon, and a 5.14% ten-year is a real cost of carrying it. That is the whole explanation for a 14-year-low housing print producing no bid.
Rate pricing barely moved: October hike odds sit at 13–16% depending on the screen and the hour, December at 89–92%. The Fed is in its pre-meeting blackout until the 28 October decision, so no official speaks this week.
The structure: descending highs into the last higher low
Monday's hourly highs came down in a straight line — $4,190.39 at 07:00 UTC, $4,177.25 at 11:00, $4,166.96 at 13:00, $4,155.38 at 14:00, $4,149.72 at 15:00. That is a seller in control of every bounce, not a market chopping sideways.
The bigger frame agrees. On the daily series this desk tracks, price sits below the 20-day at $4,174 and the 50-day at $4,323, inside a run of lower highs from $4,697 down to $4,217 and lower lows from $4,310.9 down to $4,066.4. Daily ATR(14) is $75.4, which sets the stop logic below.
One thing is still standing: Thursday's $4,131.33 low. Monday's $4,136.74 stopped $5 short of it. That level is the entire question for Tuesday. Hold it and Monday was a deep pullback inside a recovering range; lose it on a four-hour close and the higher-low sequence that carried gold off $4,073 is finished.
Trade plan — Tuesday 20 October
- Instrument: XAUUSD spot
- Session: London open through the New York close
- Bias: bearish while $4,161 caps, with $4,131.33 as the level that decides whether this is a pullback or a breakdown
- Entry: $4,161 – $4,168 sell limit, first touch (Setup A, primary)
- Stop loss: $4,183
- Take profit 1: $4,133
- Take profit 2: $4,108
- Risk-reward: 1.7R to TP1 and 3.1R to TP2 from a $4,164.50 fill
- Entry (conditional): $4,126 – $4,134 buy limit (Setup B)
- Stop loss (conditional): $4,112
- Take profit 1 (conditional): $4,161
- Take profit 2 (conditional): $4,183
- Risk-reward (conditional): 1.7R to TP1 and 2.9R to TP2 from a $4,130 fill
- Do not take it if the London open prints above $4,183 or below $4,104.
- Time stop: 16:00 UTC — cancel whatever has not filled.
Setup A sells the retest of the pivot that failed on Monday, with a stop behind the swing high that rejected price at 11:00 UTC. Setup B buys the one level that has not broken, with a stop under the $4,110.8 shelf. Only one should be live: if B fills first, cancel A rather than adding a short on top of a long.
Why the stops sit where they are
The obvious stop for Setup A is above $4,177.25, the 11:00 bar high. It is a little too obvious — a $4,180 stop is inside the wick range of a session that moved $54 between high and low. $4,183 clears the swing and the 20-day average at $4,174 together, so being stopped there means the retest genuinely failed rather than that someone ran the obvious level. Setup B's $4,112 sits behind the $4,110.8 shelf that held on the way up, and just above Setup A's $4,108 target, so the two plans cannot contradict each other.
An $18.50 stop on a $75 ATR day is roughly a quarter of the average range, so size accordingly rather than assuming a tight stop means a small loss: at 100 oz per standard lot that is $1,850 of risk per lot.
Invalidation map
- Four-hour close above $4,183: cancel Setup A. The failed-gap read is wrong; the next references are $4,199 and then $4,217, Monday's intraday ceiling and the October high.
- Four-hour close below $4,131.33: Setup B is off the table. Setup A's first target is in play, then $4,110.8 and $4,073.44, the 14 October low.
- Confirmed US strike plus Iranian retaliation against Gulf energy infrastructure: stand aside entirely. A safe-haven impulse beats a 5.14% yield, and this desk does not fade one.
- Ten-year back below 5.05% with the dollar index under 101.5: halve Setup A. The tailwind that failed on Monday would be back.
- A credible de-escalation headline: Pakistan's army chief Asim Munir is due in Tehran on 20 October and Iran says its seven-day Hormuz reopening proposal is still on the table. Either headline hits these same levels from the other side.
Execution notes
Liquidity thins around 12:30 UTC, when housing starts and permits land, and again at 14:00 UTC for pending home sales. Expect XAUUSD spreads of 40 to 60 cents there against 25 to 35 in the London afternoon. Use limit orders, not market orders, and price the stop off the actual fill — a fill at the bottom of Setup A's zone at $4,161 pays 1.3R to the first target, not the 1.7R quoted.
If you took Monday's plan from this desk, the $4,146–$4,152 buy zone was tagged at 13:00 UTC and the position is open and underwater, with the $4,129 stop untouched by $7.74. The ledger verdict is the grader's job, not this article's.
What changes the read
A close back above $4,161.9 reclaims the pivot and puts $4,177 and $4,190 back in play. A close below $4,131.33 opens $4,110.8 and then $4,073.44, and would mean Monday's rejected gap was the start of a leg rather than a one-day flush. Tuesday's calendar is second-tier: permits consensus is $1.39M–$1.40M against August's $1.39M print. The only thing on the horizon that prices this market properly is the 28 October FOMC.

Not financial advice. These are the levels this desk is watching and the orders it would place; position sizing and execution are yours. Gold at these levels can move $30 in an hour, and a plan that cannot survive a gap should not be held through one.
